Topic
1
:
Radiology as an Imaging
Science.

  1. The
concept of radiation [Concept – idea, perception, theory]

    • Roentgen discovery – unknown ray
    • Study the science and technology of x-ray imaging.

      • Matter
      • Energy
      • ElectromagneticSpectrum
      • Ionizingradiation – produce and use as a diagnostic tool as the basisfor radiography

    • Matter

      • Anythingthat occupies space.
      • Materialsubstance with mass.
      • Ex:Physical objects.
      • Fundamental[basic], complex [multifaceted] building blocks: atoms &molecules.
      • Atom– proton (+), neutron (0) & electron (-)
      • Itcan transform from one size, shape and form to another

    • Energy

      • Energyis the ability to do work.
      • Itexists in several forms in international System (SI) which
        measured in
joules(J), in radiology the unit of electron volt (eV).
      • Typesof energy

        1. Kinetic
          – energy in motion

        2. Chemical
          – chemical reaction

        3. Electrical
          – electricity

        4. Thermal
          – energy of motion at the molecular level

        5. Nuclear
          – energy contain within the nucleus of an atom

        6. Electromagnetic
          – electricity and magnet; a type of energy that is use inx-ray. (Like matter, it changes from one type to another. Ex:Electricity – produce x-ray through x-ray machine – chemical
          energy through film)

          1. Radiowaves
          2. Microwaves
          3. Ultraviolet
          4. Infraredand visible light (sun)

    • Mass-energyequivalence

      • E=mc2Theory of relativity by Albert Einstein
      • Matterand energy is interchangeable.
      • WhereE is Energy, m is mass and c is the speed of light.
      • The basis for atomic bomb, nuclear power plants and nuclear medicine

    • Radiation

      • Energyemitted and transferred through space.
      • Itis the transfer of energy.
      • Exposedand irradiated – Matter that intercepts radiation and absorbspart or all.
      • 2
        two types:

        1. Non-ionizing radiation – radiation for which the mechanism of action in tissue does not directly ionize atomic or molecular systems
          through a single interaction.

        2. Ionizingradiation

    • Ionizing Radiation

      • Ionization
        - A type of interaction between radiation and matter. The removal of an orbital electron from an atom.

      • A special type of radiation that is capable of removing an orbital electron from the atom with which it interacts.
      • Ionization occurs when x-ray passes close to an orbital electron and transfers sufficient energy to the electron to remove it from the atom.
      • The ionizing radiation may interact with and ionize additional atoms.
      • The orbital electron and the atom from which it was separated are called an ion pair.
      • A type of energy that is capable of ionizing matter is known as ionizing radiation.
      • X-rays
      • Gamma rays
      • Ultraviolet rays

    • Sources of ionizing radiation

      • 2 categories

        1. Natural

          1. Cosmic rays – sun, stars
          2. Terrestrial
            / radionuclides – earth’s deposit [uranium-decay result:
Radon- radioactive gas – concrete, bricks]

        2. Man-made

          1. Nuclear medicine – radiopharmaceuticals
          2. Smoke detectors
          3. Nuclear power plant
          4. Airport surveillance system

      • Annualdose of radiation resulting from medical application of ionizing radiation is 50 mrem (0.5 mSv)
